World traveler, social activist and educator

Estelle Tambak, (1913-2002) was born of Ukrainian Jewish immigrant parents in Philadelphia. While Estelle worked as an arts and crafts secondary teacher in her early life, at the age of 31, she revealed her sketches and watercolors to friend and painter Isadore Possoff. Possoff immediately encouraged her never to seek professional instruction and simply to “paint, paint, paint,” without a mind muddled by do’s and don’ts. This set the stage for the next 58 years of Estelle’s life as she blossomed into the world traveler, social activist and educator we remember her as today.
